Clay & Drawing in the Mountains with Priscilla Hollingsworth
Friday, November 4, 2016 - Sunday, November 6, 2016
9:00 AM EDT - 4:00 PM EST
Do you love taking a walk in the mountains, drawing inspiration from the variety and beauty of what you see? Using handbuilding methods in clay, and drawing in charcoal on paper, enhance your artistic response to the mountain landscape.
The focus of this workshop will be on drama and freedom; both realism and abstraction will be encouraged. This workshop is appropriate for those who have a lot of drawing experience as well as those who have little. In clay, the emphasis will be on sculptural handbuilding. Those who already know how to use clay can expand their skills and sense of possibility, while clay beginners can make a good start. Wheel-throwing won't be covered specifically, though participants can use wheels to make sculpture parts if they already know how to throw.
Priscilla Hollingsworth works in clay as well as other media including drawing and painting; her output includes sculpture, paintings, and installations. Much of her work combines life sciences, observation, and imagination. She has shown across the United States, Canada and China and photographs of Hollingsworth’s work have been published in 9 books and several catalogs, including Lark’s The Best of 500 Ceramics: Celebrating a Decade in Clay and 500 Vases (cover image). Hollingsworth is a Hambidge fellow and has also attended residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Santa Fe Art Institute, the Kohler Company Arts/Industry Program, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Artpark, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and others.
Ms. Hollingsworth earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, and an undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where she studied with Toshiko Takaezu. She taught from 1993 to 2010 at Augusta State University (now Augusta University), where she was appointed full professor in the art department. Hollingsworth has taught numerous workshops in the Southeast and the Midwest.
