Mold Making: Inside Out and Upside Down with Rachel K. Garceau
Friday, October 7, 2016 - Sunday, October 9, 2016
9:00 AM EDT - 4:00 PM EDT
The objective is two-fold. First, we will explore how a shift in the way we hold our bodies can also shift our perceptions of how we approach our work. Second, we will apply this concept and way of thinking to the process of mold-making, specifically for ceramics, and will cover the process of using the molds for slip-casting.
It can be a challenge to alter one’s way of thinking to understand how to perceive of the negative space of an object, or how a negative space (or mold) will create a positive form. In this workshop, we will engage in body movements, mostly rooted in yoga, to begin to change the way our bodies relate to gravity and also the axis from which we view the world. Hopefully, this will result in a new perspective when we approach mold making.
Every participant to leave the workshop with at least one working mold which they can use when they return home. Students leave with the skills to continue to make molds as well as the information that they need to use their molds. We will also talk about ways to remain mindful of the body in our studio practice, and how this consciousness can impact our focus and ability to solve problems.
Rachel K. Garceau is a studio artist living and working in Atlanta, GA, and has been recognized as a 2015 Emerging Artist by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. She utilizes large slip-cast porcelain forms to construct site-specific installations. Her work is often born from a curiosity about an object or a place and a desire to come to a deeper understanding of it. In 2013, Rachel completed the two-year Core Fellowship at Penland School of Crafts (NC). She has received residencies at Vendsyssel Kuntsmuseum (DK), Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (TN), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences (GA).
